Clinical Educator Engagement Event: “To be or not to be a Clinical Educator – Let’s not make that the Question”: Supporting Clinicians to Support Students

The Academic Coordinators of Clinical Education (ACCE) team and the Community of Practice (CoP) Committee are hosting a virtual meeting on Tuesday November 21 at 12:00-1:00 p.m. to bring together SLP and Audiology clinicians. The theme of this event is: “To be or not to be a Clinical Educator – Let’s not make that the Question”: Supporting Clinicians to Support Students. This event is an open invite to all Clinical Educators, however the focus of the session will be to support recent graduates who are considering taking a student and those clinicians who have recently become Clinical Educators. The Zoom link and information is provided below.

Format
There will be five separate breakout rooms and attendees can choose which breakout discussion they would like to join. An experienced Clinical Educator will share their experiences with mentoring and supervising students and address some of the topics listed below. The majority of this event will be interactive, where attendees can ask the Clinical Educator questions.

We have based these topics on common themes we hear from new Clinical Educators:
1. I feel nervous/anxious/stressed about taking a student. I don’t think I can do it.
2. I don’t think I have enough experience as a clinician or a Clinical Educator. What do I do?
3. How do I prepare to mentor a student?
4. How do I effectively manage my time with my caseload, workload and a student?
5. How do I give positive and constructive feedback to students? When do I give this feedback?
6. How do I evaluate and grade a student at the midterm and at the final?
7. I feel like I have imposter syndrome. What can students learn from me?

The breakout groups will be organized as follows:

Audiology
• One Facilitator with experience mentoring students in a public health setting (pediatric or adult)
• One Facilitator with experience mentoring students in a private practice setting (pediatric or adult)

Speech-Language Pathology
• One Facilitator with experience mentoring students in a public health setting or school (pediatric)
• One Facilitator with experience mentoring students in a private practice setting (pediatric, school-age and/or adult)
• One Facilitator with experience mentoring students in an adult setting (acute care or rehab)

We would greatly appreciate if you could share this email with any SLP or Audiologist who you think would be interested in attending.

For those that cannot attend, the Questions and Answers will be summarized and a document will be posted on the Community of Practice after the event.

Please RSVP by Friday November 17 so we have an approximate idea of how many participants to expect. Please complete this very short survey to RSVP: https://ubc.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1YXaZ5LF7Iet9iu
