COVID-19 Update

COVID-19 Update

Due to the COVID-19 situation and its impact on the School’s curriculum and availability of clinical externship sites, Externship schedules for the remainder of 2020 have been modified to accommodate COVID-related public health measures and consequent constraints. Please see Important Dates for specific information about SLP and Audiology externship rotations.

The School of Audiology and Speech Sciences is committed to maintaining high standards of academic and clinical education that will enable students to develop the competencies necessary for successfully completing their programs and being prepared to enter clinical practice. Any COVID-related modifications to their program will uphold these standards of excellence.

The Early 2021 externships have been released to students and their Clinical Educators. Please see below for updated information on the inclusion of students in clinical settings and their preparation prior to arriving in clinic.

1. The following measures have been in place since March and have continued to meet or exceed those provided by B.C.’s Public Health Officer.

• In keeping with University directives and since March 16th, all classes, assessments, meetings and exams are online; In this fall term, current SLP students have been wholly online, and AUDI year 1 and 2 students have had labs in small bubbles following Ministry and FoM approved PPE and infection control protocols, e.g. space occupancy, cleaning, eye protection and masks
• Students, staff and faculty are required to self-assess daily for symptoms and stay home when unwell for any reason or when directed by Public Health
• Since March 16th, the School has been closed to all students, staff and faculty with the exception of pre-approved entry for teaching labs or research complying with above conditions
• Students, staff and faculty have all completed Faculty of Medicine and UBC training for control and safety plan protocols, with a particular focus on clinical and community environments
• Students have full access to health resources and supports from UBC.

2. Travel: The Ministry of Health and Public Health Officer deem student placements under the category of work, and as such, any travel by students on placement within B.C. during placements is under the category of Essential Travel, and not subject to travel restrictions. This extends to travel within work schedule between different regions. See the additional clarification received from the Vice-Dean, Education’ s office of the Faculty of Medicine.

“Regarding the newest PHO order of travel restrictions in and outside of the VCH and FH (lower mainland) areas, are our medical students and residents exempted as they travel in and out of the lower mainland to do their clinical rotations throughout the province?” Dr. Henry responded by saying, “Yes, this refers to non essential travel. Work travel is essential but they should minimize contacts, wear masks and ensure they monitor daily for symptoms particularly if going from a higher risk area (FH and VCH) to a lower risk community.”

‘I think this is very helpful direction from Dr. Henry and we can provide the same guidance to all of our programs. The same direction would apply to Health Profession students doing clinical placements. The only special consideration would be for travel into Indigenous communities, which should always involve careful consultation on a case by case basis, which is what our programs have all done so far.’

3. Updated Public Health orders are routinely reinforced with all of our students, and the Faculty of Medicine is in regular communication with local health authorities; including review and implementation of Public Health Orders. All student concerns are addressed by the School and the University with appropriate mechanisms and supports.

Every year, UBC School of Audiology and Speech Sciences (SASS) recognizes members of its clinical faculty who demonstrate excellence in, and commitment to the clinical education of students.

This year, the 2019 Elizabeth MacLeod Award for Excellence in Clinical Education (Speech-Language Pathology) was awarded to two recipients, Allen Shoolingin and Sherri Millham of Vancouver General Hospital. We would like to acknowledge the longstanding generosity and commitment of both Allen and Sherri to the Clinical Education of SLP students. Our students describe Allen as inspiring and supportive, held in high regard by both colleagues and clients. Our students describe Sherri as attentive and a clear communicator of roles and expectations, carefully balancing their growth while modeling clinical excellence. SASS would like to thank you both for your efforts and skills and the decades of SLPs who recognize your contributions to their development as clinicians.

The 2019 Noelle Lamb Award for Excellence in Clinical Education (Audiology) was awarded to Dr. Donald MacAskill of the Vancouver Island Health Authority. Since he started with VIHA, Donald has been a gracious Clinical Educator, taking on numerous externships each year. Students have consistently acknowledged that Donald is supportive, engaging and thoughtful in his teaching methods. His skill at tailoring his mentoring to support individual strengths and learning goals has made him an excellent recipient for the award, and we look forward to the positive influence he will have on future UBC Audiology students.

Summer season at the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences!

The halls at UBC may be quieter, but during the summer there is a hive of activity at the School and in the field with 98 students either finishing or mid-stream in their externship program. As of 3rd June:

12 Second Year Audiology students are completing their final program requirements before applying to graduate in Fall 2019;
38 Second Year SLPs are finishing their final externships in places as far afield as Whitehorse to Calgary;
48 First Year Audiology and SLP students have finished Externship I and are starting Externship II, with 88% of them having at least one externship requiring relocation within BC or another Province; and
185 Clinical Educators have either just finished supervising or are currently supervising a student.
The transition from School coursework to externship is far from routine. Our students have barely a weekend for travel, often coming from another remote location to set up their homes away from home, and show up ready to learn for day one of their externship.

From a School perspective, this season involves anything from supporting students and CEs from afar to recalling students from areas impacted by forest fires.

The summer is an adventure for all, and we hope that your community is graced by an Audiology/SLP student this year. (If you happen to meet one, please tell them the best place to buy fresh produce and do their laundry!)

For sights of our students on their adventures, please follow #SASSinthewild on social media for photos of students with their favorite landmark.

Clinical Faculty Awards

Congratulations to our two deserving Clinical Faculty Award winners: Julie Lewis and Margret Orme!

Every year, UBC School of Audiology and Speech Sciences (SASS) recognizes members of its clinical faculty who demonstrate excellence in, and commitment to the clinical education of students.

This year, the 2018 Elizabeth MacLeod Award for Excellence in Clinical Education (Speech-Language Pathology) was awarded to Julie Lewis, Interior Health, Salmon Arm. Julie has fostered the learning of students by making them feel safe to receive feedback and try new skills. She has consistently created a supportive environment by individualizing the experience. Julie provides a fine layering in her learning scaffold and constructs this seamlessly around the personal experiences that each student brings to the placement. It is this personal element and individual tailoring of the learning experience that is recognized by her students and the School.

The 2018 Noelle Lamb Award for Excellence in Clinical Education (Audiology) was awarded to Margret Orme of Connect Hearing. Margret’s ability to tailor her guidance to match the learning style of each student, foster confidence and encourage critical thinking, all while caring for her clients is truly worthy of recognition. She consistently receives exceptional student feedback from Audiology and SLP students who speak of her kindness, skill, empathy, and openness. We look forward to her continued influence on UBC students, and future Audiologists in particular.
