Summary of the Role:
- Promotes tolerance, understanding, and appreciation of diversity within the school community.
- Facilitates improving staff and caregiver cooperation by promoting improved communication between home and school.
- Advises students, school personnel, caregivers of referred students, and division-based personnel with respect to communication challenges and helps others to understand child development and how it affects learning and behavior.
- Collaborates with teachers, caregivers, and administrators to find effective solutions to communication and learning.
- Completes speech, language, voice, fluency, and augmentative and alternative communication assessments and reports.
- Supports the implementation of augmentative devices to support student achievement.
- Participates as part of a school team to make recommendations to best support individual students.
- Conducts communication screening, in the areas of speech, language, voice, and fluency with a focus on early learners.
- Works with Student Achievement teams using the Intervention First model to identify factors and needs that contribute to student challenges, as well as, recommend evidence-based interventions, and when appropriate, participates in intervention plans and IIP development.
- When appropriate, provides communication services in the following forms: direct intervention in small groups or individually, classroom based intervention, whole classroom programming, team teaching, consultation, home programming, and monitoring communication development.
- Works directly with children and their caregivers to help resolve problems in learning due to communication delays or disorders.
- Provides training and in-service in areas related to communication development and disorders to teachers, support staff, and caregivers.
- Liaise with community agencies, such as Wascana Rehabilitation Centre, Child & Youth Services, Audiologist, Private Speech-Language Pathologist, other school divisions, ECIP, SPARC, SCEP, and the Early Learning Centre.
- Assists with the provision and development of resources for students to access curriculum.
