Summer season at the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences!

The halls at UBC may be quieter, but during the summer there is a hive of activity at the School and in the field with 98 students either finishing or mid-stream in their externship program. As of 3rd June:

12 Second Year Audiology students are completing their final program requirements before applying to graduate in Fall 2019;
38 Second Year SLPs are finishing their final externships in places as far afield as Whitehorse to Calgary;
48 First Year Audiology and SLP students have finished Externship I and are starting Externship II, with 88% of them having at least one externship requiring relocation within BC or another Province; and
185 Clinical Educators have either just finished supervising or are currently supervising a student.
The transition from School coursework to externship is far from routine. Our students have barely a weekend for travel, often coming from another remote location to set up their homes away from home, and show up ready to learn for day one of their externship.

From a School perspective, this season involves anything from supporting students and CEs from afar to recalling students from areas impacted by forest fires.

The summer is an adventure for all, and we hope that your community is graced by an Audiology/SLP student this year. (If you happen to meet one, please tell them the best place to buy fresh produce and do their laundry!)
